>>Getting Married in Scotland

Marriage in England & Wales
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can choose to marry in any Register Office in England and Wales, even though neither of you might live in the district covered by that office. Most Register Offices will now accept a booking up to 12 months before your proposed wedding date.

To make a booking you should contact the chosen office, but you must still comply with the legal requirements to "give notice".

Before you can marry by a civil ceremony in England and Wales, you must give notice of your intention to marry to your local Register Office. You cannot give more than 12 months notice, but you are advised to do so as soon as you legally can.

You may be asked to produce documents as evidence of name and age, usually in the form of passports, birth certificates, ID cards etc. This list is not exhaustive and other documents may also be acceptable.

If you have previously been married, you will be required to provide evidence of the termination of that marriage by either death, divorce, or nullity.

Each party to the marriage will need to attend at the Register Office in person and give notice of their intention to marry. This is the case even when you live in the same Registration District. You do not have to attend together but are encouraged to do so. This has changed from the old regulations.

Each party to the marriage will be required to declare nationality.
This change has been introduced to enable the Superintendent Registrar to advise you whether any further administrative procedures or legal requirements are needed to ensure the recognition of the marriage in the country of which you are a national. The preferred document as evidence of nationality will always be a passport, however for people born abroad an ID card or Home Office travel document or acknowledgement showing nationality will also be acceptable. In the absence of such a document, advice should be sought from the Superintendent Registrar in the district where the notice is to be given.
